Updudes started as a silly joke…
Back in 2014 I thought it would be pretty hilarious to get the burliest dude I know to allow me to give him a glamorous hairdo and have badass photographer Rebecca Joelson capture it. Hilarious it was, yet I had no idea how impactful and eye opening this fun passion project would be for me.
Over the years I’ve become aware of how oppressive gender roles can be for so many. “Be a man” “Act like a lady” these statements and so much more can dilute the true uniqueness of human beings. MJs Updudes has become my way of activism through art and creativity. My goal is to help eliminate the oppressive confines of gender roles.
